Laser Cutting Class in Pittsburgh
Prototype PGH runs a laser cutting class in Pittsburgh at both of our makerspaces. Here is the full description from our team:
A popular offering for our members is use of a laser cutter/engraver at either of our two makerspace locations! In our laser cutting trainings you will learn safe operation of our laser cutters along with a primer of the software used with each machine. This workshop is for beginners, but more advanced students are welcome to come with their own files and projects. We run laser cutting/laser engraver trainings for the xTool at Prototype x Oakland and trainings for the OmTech Polar Lite at Prototype x Sharpsburg. You can also learn how to use the laser cutters with one-on-one guidance and technical support by booking a private equipment clearance training.
All of our workshops are for all skill levels, unless stated clearly in the title of the workshop, e.g. "Advanced Sewing Workshop" or "Advanced 3d Printing" classes.
Curriculum
First we will review how a laser cutter works and what all the parts are. You will learn safe operation of the xTool P2S (at the Oakland makerspace) or the OmTech Polar Lite (at the Sharpsburg makerspace), and review fire safety protocols. Then you will learn how to create your own design in vector image design software (XTool Studio or Lightburn), and make it real on the laser cut machine by laser cutting and engraving your design! Finally, we will review cleanup standards and protocols for taking care of the machines and the makerspace.
What you can make and the materials you can use
Laser cutting and engraving is great for signage, jewelry, custom keychains, name tags, coasters, stamps, and detailed engraved artwork on wood or acrylic. A laser cutter uses a focused beam to either cut all the way through a material or etch a design onto its surface, which is why the same machine handles both cutting and engraving. Beginners usually start with plywood and acrylic because they cut cleanly and predictably. Once you are comfortable, our machines can also work with a range of other materials, covered in the FAQ below.
Frequently asked questions
What is laser cutting?
Laser cutting is the process by which a beam of light is focused through a CO2 tube and a series of mirrors, in order to remove material in a precise pattern determined by the user. Also known as laser engraving, because these machines can both cut and engrave various materials.
What machines do you have access to?
At Prototype x Oakland we have an xTool P2S, and at Prototype x Sharpsburg we have an OmTech Polar Lite.
Is there safety training included in the workshop?
Every clearance workshop includes safety training.
What materials can I use on the laser engraver?
Plywood and acrylic are the most commonly laser-cut or laser-engraved materials. You can customize a number of materials on our laser cutting machines, including aluminum or stainless steel, rubber (e.g. for laser engraving custom rubber stamps), polyurethane/faux leather, card stock or paper, and even fabric! For more advanced materials (beyond plywood or acrylic sheets), please book a private equipment clearance training for one-on-one technical support to learn the laser engraver for your specific project needs!
Do I have to pay for materials in the space?
Both Prototype locations have fresh sheets of basswood plywood and acrylic of various colors available for purchase at wholesale prices. We also have scrap bins of material offcuts free to use for any member.
Do I have to be a member to use the equipment?
Yes. Equipment is only available for reservation and use by members who have been cleared on the equipment, either by taking a workshop or a private equipment clearance training. Prototype members with their equipment clearances are invited to bring one or two friends to the space to work on projects with, however.
