Sewing Classes in Pittsburgh

Prototype PGH offers sewing classes in Pittsburgh for people at every skill level, at our Oakland and Sharpsburg makerspaces. Here is more about our sewing and fiber arts community, from the people who run it:

Prototype PGH is a great landing space for sewists and fiber artists of all varieties. We have Singer Heavy Duty and Brother sewing machines at both locations -- the Sharpsburg makerspace and the North Oakland makerspace in the Blumcraft building. We also stock basic sewing supplies -- needles and thread, including hand sewing needles; tailors chalk and measuring tapes; plus, a bin of fabric scraps at each location for practicing or making projects with.

Prototype PGH has sewing classes and workshops right here in Pittsburgh. We have workshops geared towards beginners learning the ropes of sewing and fiber arts, such as Sewing Machines for Absolute Beginners, and occasionally we have project-specific or skill-based sewing workshops such as how to make your own swim suit, custom chest binders sewing workshops, and more.

On the first Sunday of every month at our Sharpsburg makerspace location, Prototype hosts Trans Tailoring, a free sewing meetup. Trans tailoring is welcome to people of all genders and embodied experiences, and centers trans bodies and experiences. It is a body-neutral and gender-neutral space. Find out more on the free events page.

All of our workshops are for all skill levels, unless stated clearly in the title of the workshop, e.g. "Advanced Sewing Workshop" or "Advanced 3d Printing" classes.

Good to know before you register

Sewing machines and basic supplies are provided at both locations, so you can come as a complete beginner and leave having made something. You are also welcome to bring your own machine, fabric, or a project you want help with. If you have questions about physical access at either location, or what to bring, email us before you register and we will make sure the workshop works for you.

Pricing varies by workshop and is listed on each event's registration page. Prototype members receive a discount on paid workshops. No one is turned away for lack of funds. If the listed price is a barrier, email us and we will get you registered. You will never be asked to explain your financial situation.
